Mentors are essential to the successful implementation of the Growsmart Educational Programme. They provide the necessary support and guidance to assist learners during the duration of the competition.

Here mentors will find the resources to support them to better equip their learners.

Literacy

A quick summary

Particpating schools are selected by the Education Department to participate in Growsmart every year. Each school is represented by a team of three learners in Grades 4, 5 and 6. Each year, different learners are chosen to represent their schools in the various competition. Learners who have already competed in Growsmart may not compete again the following year. Each team has a mentor who guides them and helps them prepare for the competition.

There are three levels to the Growsmart competition. All schools compete in Level 1 and the winners of each round advance to Level 2. Eight winners of Level 2 advance to the semi-final, of which five will advance to the final. All competition rounds are held on Saturdays.

Story telling and poetry

A quick summary

The Story writing and poetry competition is completely separate from the Growsmart spelling competition.

This is a competition for individual learners, not teams. Only Growsmart learners are eligible to enter. Learners must write their story by hand in PEN (on the lined pages of their story book) and provide hand-drawn illustrations (on the blank pages) that match and enhance the text.

Science

A quick summary

The science competition, called Growsmart Scientist, will consist of teams of three learners from the participating Growsmart schools. They cannot compete in any other Growsmart competition during that year, nor may they have competed in any previous Growsmart competitions.

The objective of the competition is for teams to identify a problem and present their scientific solution. Each of the teams will submit a unique science project.

Each school may select three learners from the pool of learners in Grades 4, 5 and 6. Only one team per school allowed and they must be supervised by a mentor.

Debating

A quick summary

The Debating competition is for Grade 6 learners only and will run alongside the Growsmart Literacy, Mathematics, Science and Story writing competitions, although it will be completely separate from it.

There are two teams competing with three learners each – of which the one team offers a proposition and the other, anĀ opposition. Each learner will have a specific role within the team:
1. Learner one has to present the lay the foundation of the proposition by defining the motion.
2. Learner two has to give motive or research-based support for their argument.
3. Learners three does the reply speech (conclusion).

Mathematics

A quick summary

The mathematics competition will consist of teams of three learners from the participating Growsmart schools. They cannot compete in any other Growsmart competition during that year, nor may they have competed in any previous Growsmart competitions.

Each school may select three learners from the pool of learners in Grades 4, 5 and 6 (they must not be the same learners who are competing in the Growsmart Literacy, Story writing or Science competitions).

One hundred and fifty schools are selected by the Western Cape Education Department to participate in Growsmart every year. Each school is represented by a team of three learners in Grades 4, 5 and 6. Each year, different learners are chosen to represent their schools in the various competition. Learners who have already competed in Growsmart may not compete again the following year. Each team has a mentor who guides them and helps them prepare for the competition.
