Bernice Pedro participated in the Growsmart Story Writing Competition as a learner from Balvenie Primary School in 2018. Her short story, “Bernice and the Beautiful Blanket”, was selected as one of the TOP 2O authors in the Western Cape, and she became a published author in the Children Writing to Grow Smart publication in 2018.
As a result of her participation in the programme, she was afforded the opportunity to apply for high school bursaries at various institutions. It was her application to the Kay Mason Foundation that was successful. The bursary will cover her high school fees, uniform, stationery and transport. Her parents applied to different high schools, and she was accepted at Fairborn College. She could not be happier to attend a school that offers so many opportunities for her to be successful.
“Even though the Growsmart competition was hard, I pushed myself because success was my goal, which meant that I had to work hard, learned from failure and persevered,” she says.
